Obits: Johnny Ramone’s Friends

October 8, 1948 – September 15, 2004

Johnny and true fans…

All of Johnny’s friends turned out for the statue unveiling at the Hollywood Forever Cemetary Friday, January 14. It was a bit of a turn off when we arrived at the front gate and was asked if we were on the guest or press list and that we couldn’t park inside the cemetary, however the security guard was cool in warning folks that tickets were given if you parked on Santa Monica Blvd. Approximately 100 people made the trek to the cemetary to honor Johnny in the unveiling of the statue likeness of him. Nicholas Cage, Eddie Vedder, Tommy Ramone, CJ Ramone and a lot of other close friends of Johnny’s shared their moments that they had with Johnny. In the crowd was Johnny’s widow, Linda Cummings (pictured above in the white fur coat), Lisa Marie Presley and others.Markey Ramone was noticably absent and missed by the fans in attendance. We’re sure he would have been there if he could have. (photo: Dawn Laureen)

He was diagnosed with advanced Leukemia. Arthur’s dream of The New York Dolls reuniting became a reality at their well received performances at Morrissey’s Meltdown Festival in June 2004. photo: Dawn Laureen

Obits: Mario Duane Gardner

1968 – 2002

Mario was dramatic, angry, compassionate and wickedly funny. A performance artist, actor, and one of the most beautiful singing voices ever (an angel and demon sharing one voice.) He did mainstream but what really showed his talent was the undeground feature film, Days of Pentcost and an award winning series of shorts called Whitney – Mama’s Little Baby. Mario committed suicide at the end of June. There was just too much pain, in the world, in his soul, in his own body from living with Aids, in his mind, his note said to forgive him for being weak. I would never consider you weak, Mario. You lived life strong and hard with a sweet fierceness I admired. I miss you. – C.P.

Obits: Marc “Mad Marc Rude” Hoffman

Marc’s amazing artwork has been published in the past issues of Dert!, the “hip-pocket” size magazine started in 1991. In the first issue of Dert! Marc gave me an india ink drawing of a pierced penis. I wasn’t too sure about how Dert! readers would respond to his artistic expression. I ran it, and everyone loved it. Marc was also involved with charity causes. He contributed an india ink drawing of an angel with a broken wing for the Hollygrove Orphanage Roxy Benefit show where the late River Phoenix performed his last acoustic performanceMarc is now with the tatooed angels.
