THE OBIT CRYPT
"all the people I loved died - they were all my friends, but they all died"
One Less Doll - Arthur Kane - Bassist of New York Dolls
February 3, 1949 - July 13, 2004
Our friend Arthur Kane passed away Tuesday, July 13, 2004 at 7:30pm after checking into the hospital earlier that day for what he thought was a bad case of the flu. He was diagnosed with advanced Leukemia. Arthur's dream of The New York Dolls reuniting became a reality at their well received performances at Morrissey's Meltdown Festival in June 2004. Johnny Ramone, age 55, guitarist and co-founder of The Ramones, has died. He passed away in his sleep September 15 (Wed) at his Los Angeles home, surrounded by friends and family. He had battled prostate cancer for five years, and was admitted to the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in June. Ramone, born John Cummings, was one of the original members of the Ramones, whose hit songs I Wanna Be Sedated and Blitzkrieg Bop, among others, earned the band induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. The band's singer, Joey Ramone, whose real name was Jeff Hyman, died in 2001 of lymphatic cancer. Bassist Dee Dee Ramone, who was born Douglas Colvin, died from a drug overdose in 2002.
R.I.P. MARC "MAD MARC RUDE" HOFFMAN 1954-2002
Marc's amazing artwork has been published in the past issues of Dert!, the "hip-pocket" size magazine started in 1991. In the first issue of Dert! Marc gave me an india ink drawing of a pierced penis. I wasn't too sure about how Dert! readers would respond to his artistic expression. I ran it, and everyone loved it. Marc was also involved with charity causes. He contributed an india ink drawing of an angel with a broken wing for the Hollygrove Orphanage Roxy Benefit show where the late River Phoenix performed his last acoustic performance. Marc is now with the tatooed angels.
MARIO DUANE GARDNER 1968 - 2002
Mario was dramatic, angry, compassionate and wickedly funny. A performance artist, actor, and one of the most beautiful singing voices ever (an angel and demon sharing one voice.) He did mainstream but what really showed his talent was the undeground feature film, Days of Pentcost and an award winning series of shorts called Whitney - Mama's Little Baby. Mario committed suicide at the end of June. There was just too much pain, in the world, in his soul, in his own body from living with Aids, in his mind, his note said to forgive him for being weak. I would never consider you weak, Mario. You lived life strong and hard with a sweet fierceness I admired. I miss you. - C.P.
